Helpman, Benjamin Francis, 1814-1874

Benjamin Francis (or Franklin) Helpman was born in Devon, England in 1814. He joined the navy in 1829 and left in 1840. He entered the government service, making many more voyages and leading a number of important expeditions. In 1854, he and his family settled at Warrnambool, Vic. where he became harbour master in 1861 and collector of customs in 1869. He died in 1874. Stokes, John Lort, 1811-1885

John Lort Stokes (b. 1811 - d. 1885) was commissioned as a lieutenant in 1837 and sailed to Australia on the Beagle under Commander J.C. and P.P. King. After doing some surveying of the coast sail was set for the north on 5 January 1838. The Adelaide River was discovered in March 1839 and the Victoria later in the same year. Later further work was done on the coast of northern and north-western Australia, and in 1842 on the southern coast of Australia, Bass Strait and Tasmania. In May 1843 Stoke...
